If you've been on any of our previous garden tours, you know that while South Philly gardens come in all shapes and sizes, they're all labors of love. Sometimes that love comes from one single-minded person with a big heart (and a very green thumb). Other times, it takes a village. That's the case with the three community gardens featured in this year's tour. Let's take a look:
GW Childs Elementary School
This community garden at GW Childs Elementary School was redone last spring as part of Comcast Cares Day, and is a center for relationship building, educational activities … and the growing of delicious veggies. As the folks at NICE (Neighbors Investing in Childs Elementary) put it on their great and informative blog:
This awesome day of volunteerism included planting flowers, fruits and vegetables in Childs’ play yard. With the end of the school year not far behind the event, NICE took charge of caring for the plants during the hot summer months. Volunteers from the neighborhood are signing up for different days to water the plants and harvest the fruits and vegetables June through September.
Thanks to all the great effort, students can look forward to a verdant play yard when they get back to school (whether they're looking forward to going back to school or not).

Aquinas Multicultural Center
Since 2013, the Aquinas Center has been a collaborative, multilingual and intercultural space in the former convent of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Community. Its mission: to build unity in diversity, support learning, and inspire thoughtful action.
Its community garden helps toward those goals, creating an interactive space for youth and adults to grow delicious produce while exploring their cultural relationships to food.

Bouvier Community Garden
In 2008 in the pouring rain, a group of dedicated neighbors began transforming two abandoned garden plots on the 1300 block of Bouvier Street. The end result, the Bouvier Community Garden, has since blossomed into a place of beauty and rejuvenation for the neighborhood.
The gardeners take part in a sustainable community food system, foster environmental education and healthy recreation, and preserve horticultural space in the city.
