Earth Month, You & Us Too

April is Earth Month, a time to reflect on our relationship with the planet and take action to protect it!

Here at South Philly Food Co-Op it is part of our mission of using food as a force for good to care for the Earth, our only home. Through our store practices, goods and outreach we do what we can to reduce our footprint & be a space that allows those who try to be conscious of theirs to do the same.

Sowing Seeds & Planting Trees

The easiest way to learn to appreciate the planet is to get your hands into some soil and plant something! We just opened our Garden Center & have a selection of seeds available! We just recently hosted a Plant Swap outside our store to meet our neighbors and donate & trade pots, seeds, starts & propagations. We'll announce another plant swap soon!

Our store does what it can to reduce it's footprint by recycling packaging, composting with Bennet Compost to return produce waste to the Earth, donating items to reduce food waste, and using receipt paper made of recycled materials that gives back by planting trees for each purchase! [We've almost planted 20!]

This month our Round Up of the Month is the Clean Air Council.  One of the oldest environmental non-profits in Philadelphia. We are working with them to install a new bike rack for our store in the coming months!

Brands the Give Back

We do our best to support brands we can be proud to have on our shelves that align with our mission of doing their best for our community & our planet.

We get as much as we can locally in order to reduce carbon emissions. Most of our produce comes from local Pennsylvania farms who use natural & renewable farming techniques that are good for the Earth and for you! We'd like to highlight Habitat Farms, a small-batch pantry provisions company working with farmers to help protect birds, bees, and local waterways.

Reusable, Recyclable, Compostable

We bring in items we think will help our customers live a comfortable and sustainable lifestyle! Here are some of our favorites!

We have...

  • Biodegradable sponges made from natural materials
  • Eco-Friendly cleaners like Green Llama that offer reusable packaging and refills!
  • Baking Cups, aluminum foil, baking paper & more from If You Care, a brand the prioritizes sustainability.
  • Many reusable replacements for items like straws, baking Cups sandwich bags & more to reduce your waste at home!
  • Tree free facial tissues
  • Biodegradable pet waste bags
  • Our Co-Op also has a bulk selection, allowing you to refill your own jars & containers! We carry coffee, nuts, grains, dried fruits and so much more and we are looking to add some expanded options in the coming months, including spices!

We'd also like to shout out our Shop South Philly Partner who we recently featured on our Instagram page Good Buy SupplyThey are Philadelphia’s sustainable general store; a neighborhood resource for low-waste living. Member-Owners save 10% off refill products at Good Buy Supply when they bring their own container!
