September 2025 Round-Up: Fishtails Animal Rescue

Every month we highlight an organization you can support at the register. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our August Round up at the Register for Vietlead

We raised over $252!

Our September Round Up is: Fishtails Animal Rescue!

Founded in 2017, Fishtails Animal Rescue (FAR) is a foster-based 501(c)3 organization committed to the rescue and rehabilitation of the at-risk, stray, and shelter animals of Philadelphia. FAR provides animals with necessary medical treatment, safe and loving foster homes, and ultimately, their forever home.

Fishtails Animal Rescue, the rescue arm of the Fishtown Animal Hospital, was created by Dr. Lauren Cohn when she saw a need for an additional space committed to the rescue and rehabilitation of stray and shelter animals in her community.

She began her rescue efforts by pulling animals from local shelters that would normally be deemed “unadoptable” due to extreme medical concerns, providing the animals with necessary medical treatments, safe and loving temporary foster care, and ultimately finding them their forever homes.

Fishtails Animal Rescue uses its Fighting Chance Fund to provide financial assistance to pet owners facing extraordinary veterinary expenses, to avoid surrender or euthanasia of a beloved family pet.

The Fishtails Animal Rescue believes that every animal deserves their fighting chance.

Fishtails would like to shift the focus to one of their rescues, Girard.

She’s about 5 months old. She was trapped for weeks under the live tracks at Girard Station on the Market Frankford Line. It’s truly a miracle she’s alive today.

When they took her in, she was infested with fleas, had severe head trauma, lacerations, and was extremely dehydrated. After a hospital stay, Girard made a great recovery and Dr. Cohn took her home . However, a few weeks later Girard became extremely ill with a fever that wouldn’t break and a horrible skin infection. Her leg became extremely swollen. Her skin started dying on her body and it had to be removed. She’s going through daily bandage changes where she has to be put to sleep it’s so painful. However, the poor baby is still happy and making biscuits… fighting through it all!

She’s stable enough now that she is eligible for a skin graft, however, it’s extremely expensive. The only alternative is to amputate her leg, which we do not want to do. Girard is so young and deserves a fighting chance at a happy, healthy life. We want to raise funds to give her this opportunity.
